History of Lathe Machine

A lathe is an ancient tool, with Weak evidence for its survivor at a Mycenaean Greek site, dating back as far as the 13th or 14th century BC.

The lathe was very important to the Industrial radiancy. It is known as the mother of lathe machines in industries, as it was the first lathe machine that signs to the invention of other lathe machines. The first fully equipped, all-metal slide rest lathe was invented by Jacques de Vaucanson around 1751.

The lathe was also known and used in Assyria and Greece. Ancient Romans came to know about this machine and they further developed this machine. During the medieval period, the use of this machine had spread to most parts of Europe and it was during the Industrial revolution when this machine gained popularity with its use in all the industries. After the development of electronics, automated lathes have been developed.

Evolution of Lathe

The first lathe was a simple lathe which was is now referred to as a two-person lathe. One person would turn the woodwork piece using rope and the other person would shape the workpiece using a sharp tool. This design was improved by Ancient Romans who added a turning bow that eased the woodwork. Later a pedal (as in manual sewing machines) was used for rotating the workpiece. This type of lathe is called the “spring pole” lathe which was used till the early decades of the 20th century. In 1772, a horse-powered boring machine was installed which was used for making canons. During the Industrial Revolution, steam engines and water wheels were attached to the lathe to turn the workpiece at a higher speed which made the work faster and easier. After 1950, many new designs were made which improved the precision of work.

Lathes Throughout The Centuries

The lathe’s origin dates back to 13th Century BCE when it was used by Greek woodworkers as shown in findings from archaeological digs. Early units were operated by two people, with one turning a given piece with a rope and another cutting the piece.
ㆍOther locations known to have adopted lathes for crafting parts in the ancient world include Northern Italy, China, the area now known as Turkey,  and Egypt.
ㆍWith the advent of the Industrial Revolution, the role of the lathe became increasingly significant as it began to be used to craft parts for other machine tools. ㆍThis made lathe machines a crucial building block in the modern era and helped to pave the way for current industrialization and automation.
ㆍPower via steam engine and water wheels were utilized for lathes during the Industrial Revolution, significantly speeding up processing times and making the crafting of tools easier.
ㆍBy the end of the 1800s, electric motors began to be the power source of choice for lathes which revolutionized the industry and further sped up production.
The introduction of CNC lathes, or computerized numerical control lathes, in the 20th Century modernized the industry even further and helped to provide computerized precision.
